Architecture and property
Sydenham’s properties are mainly a mixture of Victorian and Edwardian terrace houses. Like much of South London, the area grew rapidly around the 1900s creating a high demand for family homes. Renowned for beautiful and unique architecture, Sydenham currently has seven separate Conservation Areas. These include the large Edwardian houses that line the Thorpes Estate, and Lammas Green – a housing estate built in the 1950s by the Corporation of London to re-home residents whose own homes had been destroyed by bombs during WWII. Sydenham remains at the more affordable end of South East London’s property prices and with its wide variety of architecture, there is something to suit every taste.
Eating and drinking
Sydenham has received huge investment into its dining and hospitality options over the last few years. The Cobbs Corner area in particular has benefitted from the opening of The Greyhound Pub and a Nando’s more recently. There are a variety of eateries and coffee shops on Sydenham’s High Streets, while off the beaten track places like the Dulwich Wood House remain a firm favourite with locals.
Parks and commons
When you think of green spaces to visit in London, it’s fair to say that South East London is certainly not lacking in that department. Sydenham has two main parks, Mayow Park which can be found just a short walk away from Sydenham Station and Sydenham Wells Park, which was once the site of the actual Crystal Palace following its relocation after the Great Exhibition. On the Sydenham borders sits Crystal Palace Park, one of the largest parks in the area and a must visit for families – it's famous for its dinosaur inhabited lake! For those who prefer the more rugged outdoors, Sydenham Hill Woods is a wonderful place to explore and remains a firm favourite with the four-legged locals.
Famous residents
Sydenham certainly has its fair share of household names. Here are just a handful of the famous faces to have graced SE26: Lawrie Park Avenue was once home to model and actress, Kelly Brook & her Titanic actor boyfriend at the time, Billy Zane. French Connection model and Team GB Olympic diver turned Hollywood Hardman, Jason Statham was born in Sydenham. West end star and 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?' winner, Connie Fisher, originally from Northern Ireland, is a more recent Sydenham resident.
Transport
Sydenham benefits from three train stations: Sydenham, Sydenham Hill & Lower Sydenham. The three stations offer residents services from the London Overground, South Eastern & Southern Rail services.
All three stations, Sydenham, Sydenham Hill & Lower Sydenham, are classed as Zone 3.
Sydenham benefits from a reliable bus service, with transport running into London. Some bus routes to be aware of include: the 176 service to Tottenham Court Road, the 197 service to Peckham, and the 202 service to Crystal Palace.
Education
With a selection of Primary and Secondary, independent and publicly funded schools in the area, parents have a lot of options when it comes to their children’s education.
Local schools include:
- Eliot Bank Primary School – a mixed Ofsted Outstanding primary school.
- St Bartholomew’s C.E. – a faith primary school.
- Adamsrill Primary School – a mixed primary school.
- Sydenham High School – an independent girls’ school for ages four to 18.
- Sydenham School – a girls’ secondary comprehensive school.
